Syracuse Zoo Family Fun Run Header RGZ

Join us for the zoo’s first family race on Saturday, September 28. Families are encouraged to participate in the 2.5K (1.5 miles) child-friendly run/walk through a portion of Burnet Park and the zoo’s Wildlife Trail. The course will bring participants past animal exhibits and end in the zoo courtyard with cider and donuts, music and giveaways – including free zoo admission for the day. Strollers are permitted on the course while four-legged friends are not. Wear an animal print on race day to be entered in a raffle for a special animal experience!

Registration:
$20 per adult
$15 per child ages 4-12
Free for children 3 and under

Paid registrations include a free race T-shirt, access to the post-race party and zoo admission.
Register by September 1, 2019 to guarantee your free T-shirt.

Proceeds support the Amur Leopard Project at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.

Family Volunteer Cleanup Day

Syracuse Zoo RGZ Family Volunteer Cleanup Day AZA

Bring the family to participate in a volunteer cleanup of the Burnet Park side of the zoo’s perimeter. This event is designed for families of all ages to demonstrate community volunteerism. The first 200 participants who sign up and show up the day of the event will receive a free native plant. Those who post a photo showing they planted their plant by Memorial Day — tagging @syracusezoo with hashtag #SpringIntoAction – will be entered in a drawing for a special keeper chat at the zoo. Drinks and snacks will be provided at the end of the cleanup, and the first 100 people who registered will receive wristbands for free admission to the zoo the day of the event.

Participants are encouraged to visit the zoo and attend special Endangered Species Day Keeper chats and other activities.

Schedule for Family Cleanup and Endangered Species Day 

9 a.m. – Family Volunteer Cleanup participants report for cleanup in front of the zoo entrance.

9-11 a.m. – Volunteer Cleanup participants help with litter pickup on the Burnet Park side of the zoo perimeter.

11 a.m. – Drinks and snacks for cleanup participants.

The events are part of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) Spring into Action campaign, which leverages the resources of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums to offer family-friendly opportunities to improve and protect our planet.

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is among 233 institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), which requires its members to meet the highest standards of animal care, wildlife conservation, education and guest experience.

AZA provided grants for 50 of its institutions to hold volunteer activities for the Spring into Action Campaign. The grant allowed the Syracuse zoo to purchase 200 native plants for the first 200 participants in the May 18 cleanup.

Watch the animals as they enjoy their very own “Egg-Stravaganza.” A variety of animals will receive eggs and egg-shaped enrichment items throughout the day. Don’t miss this egg-citing event! Presenting unusual items to the animals is part of the zoo’s enrichment program, designed to promote natural behaviors and keep our animals engaged, curious and happy.

Follow the white rabbit to the zoo for a very special tea party with Alice and the Mad Hatter! Feast on fantastical finger foods, fruits and pastries, sip Fairytale Punch and select teas, play flamingo croquet and join the Queen of Hearts and her magical soldiers for games! Meet one of our charming animal ambassadors, too! Wear your maddest hat and don’t be late for this enchanting garden party at the zoo! Ticket includes zoo admission.

Pokémon Go Day!

Pokémon Go enthusiasts can come ‘Catch ‘em all’ at the zoo, with lures throughout the zoo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. See how many zoo-themed Pokémon you can catch! Rapid charging station will be available, bring your charging cord. All Pokémon will be in public areas of the zoo, so have fun, respect signage and play safely! The first 200 children at the zoo will receive a free Pokémon-themed gift.

Superhero Day!

Kids, dress up as your favorite superhero for this super-fun day at the zoo! Tour the exhibits, learn about our super-powered animal friends and enjoy superhero-themed games and activities. Plus, Syracuse Crunch mascot, Crunchman, will be on hand to greet his superhero friends from 10 a.m. to noon!

Children of all ages and their favorite teddy bear or plush animal are invited to attend a special Teddy Bear Clinic presented by St. Joseph’s Health. If your pal has received an excessive amount of love over the years, zoo volunteers and medical staff from St. Joseph’s Health will be onsite to offer “first aid.”
